John Hanks Alexander’s Grave site at the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Xenia, OH

The Legacy Project

The Legacy Project is an effort to “clean-up” the gravesites of our trailblazers, many of which have become dilapidated.

In May, Do More Together supported two cleanup events for the Cherry Grove cemetery in Xenia, Ohio where John Hanks Alexander’s grave is located.

John Hanks Alexander  was the first African-American officer in the United States armed forces to hold a regular command position and the second African-American graduate of the United States Military Academy. His gravesite was in a state of disrepair and in need of restoration, not to mention, Alexander is buried alongside many other Black Veterans.

May 13th and the 25th were the first two days which will be followed by a fall cleanup date with ROTC cadets from Wilberforce and Central State University

The cleanup effort was led by Mr. Carl Kennedy, the President of the Board of the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Along with the local VFW, the American Legion, and local churches for volunteer recruitment and considering the older demographic, there were about 20 local community members who volunteered for this effort.

dmT is proud of this momentous effort and partnership with the local community.
